Snow Days ahead? Keep June 1-4 open, just in case

Weather forecasters are keeping an eye on the possibility of a strong El Niño this winter. While that doesn’t guarantee a snowier-than-normal winter in Southwest Colorado, it’s a good reminder for DSD families and staff to plan ahead for the possibility of Snow Days.

Before you make your summer plans, please keep June 1-4, 2027, open. The last scheduled day of school is Friday, May 28, 2027. However, the DSD Academic Calendar designates June 1-4 as potential makeup days if winter weather causes multiple school closures.

Colorado schools are required to provide a minimum number of instructional hours each year. The state allows a limited number of hours to be waived for safety-related closures. If we have enough Snow Days to exceed that allowance, DSD may need to extend the school year into the designated makeup days.

We hope we won't need them! But families should avoid scheduling vacations, travel, or other commitments for June 1-4 until we know those days won't be necessary.
