Symphonic Sound Waves Trips and Announcements (7/8)
Field Trip 1: Music Performance Assessment at Bayfield HS Instrumental Festival (required festival performance. If you are at school, you are expected to be with us)
4/24 Wednesday 8:15a-12p
Please bring your child to school BEFORE 8:15, we are departing the school and cannot be late. Orchestra is riding on the bus with us and they perform at 9a, so we must be on the bus by 8:05a.
Bayfield High School Performing Arts Center, performance at 10:15a
Feel free to come see us perform at the high school. Free attendance for the public as far as I know.
For all, here's what we do at this festival. We will start by watching the Bayfield MS band perform. Then we will warm-up, perform, and sight-read (a special part of this festival where students will be challenged to play a piece of music they have never seen before for judging). After we've done our playing we will watch other groups until it is time to depart.
What to bring
Students need to bring concert black clothes, instrument (percussion will bring our small instruments!), sheet music, water bottle, snack if desired. Students also need a writing utensil for our watching of other bands. No cost for the trip.
We are deciding between a few songs. Everyone please PRACTICE THIS WEEKEND!!!!
Chaperones
I am in need of 1-2 chaperones for this event. It is a very fun and easy one to chaperone since I am with the students the entire time.
Field Trip 2: Music in the Parks overnight trip in Denver. (optional trip for all SSW members due to fees and overnight. 6th graders are invited to audition to join us)
Friday May 10th 7a - Saturday May 11th 11p
Basic itinerary: Drive to Arvada, warm-up and perform at Arvada HS performing arts center, eat Friday dinner and play at Boondocks Northglenn. Pool time at hotel in the evening. Saturday is all Elitches Amusement Park, and we leave about 2p or 3p arriving back in Durango around 11p.
More information to follow as I finalize itinerary, items to bring, etc.
Breakfast from MMS on Friday is optional if you request beforehand, dinner Friday, and Saturday breakfast and lunch are provided for both students and chaperones.
Chaperones
This trip is the one we need the most chaperones for, but it is one of the most fun trips to chaperone! Chaperones are an integral part of this trip, and we do not attend unless we are fully staffed.
Adults will help supervise students once in Denver, they do not need to ride the bus. They will help us move into the performance hall, watch our performance, and then go eat and play at Boondocks with us. Chaperones will be assigned a group of 5-7 students each to supervise throughout the trip. At Elitches we split the chaperone groups so students can easily go on rides and chaperones simply follow.
6th Grade Beginning Band Trip
Field Trip: FlyHigh Farmington Trampoline Park 6th grade band celebration!
4/29 Monday 9a-2p
Throughout their first year of middle school, our 6th graders took the plunge into learning an instrument, most for the very first time. We didn't know how to play, how to read music, or how to work together as an ensemble to make music. Now we are playing REAL sheet music, rehearsing as a band all together, and working as a team to create a positive, fun, and musical experience throughout our next two years. To thank our beginners for starting this journey with us, we jump for joy!
Due to the nature of this trip, this is not required. Additionally, adults please know this trip has a higher risk of injury.
What to bring
Students need to bring comfortable and appropriate clothing, trampoline socks (provided if your student does not have any), and sack lunch. Students needing sack lunch from MMS need to let Ms. Post know by Thursday 4/25 if they need school lunch.
If you have extra tramp socks at home, please start bringing these in to help out the rest of the band who don't have socks!
All students need to have a waiver filled out for FlyHigh to go on the trip. I will update students in class whether they have a waiver or not. Link!
We are asking students to pay $25 to help cover the cost for the trip. If you can sponsor another student, we would greatly appreciate it. If you need a sponsorship, please let me know.
Chaperones
I am in need of 2-4 chaperones for this event. It is a very fun and easy one to chaperone since I am with the students the entire time plus there are staff members at FlyHigh. You are simply supervising behaviors and if you'd like to jump you can join!
Audition Information for Music in the Parks and Jazz Band
Auditions for All 6th Grade Band Students
Students are invited to audition to join our advanced band on our overnight Denver Music in the Parks field trip. Students can get more information about auditions from Post. Sheet music for auditions and the sign-up for times will be outside my room and all auditions for MiP must be completed by 4/26.
Students are also highly encouraged to audition for Miller's Jazz Band. Jazz Band is our highest band at Miller, taking only students who audition and make the group. Students auditioning in 6th grade play number 140 Manhattan Beach March in our Tradition of Excellence Red books for jazz auditions. The traditional instruments of jazz band are: saxophones (students may play alto, tenor, or bari), trumpets, trombone/euphonium, and our rhythm section of bass (electric or upright), drumset (also does improvisation on percussion and can be combined with pianist position), piano (highly competitive), and guitar (electric or acoustic). If your student does not play a traditional jazz instrument, they can still be in the jazz band! They can either pick up a secondary instrument and rent from the school or shop, or they can play their primary instrument and learn how to read music a bit differently.
Jazz Band will occur during our homeroom time next school year, so it is required to be in concert band if you are in Jazz Band with the exception of the rhythm section. Jazz Band will not take up one of your exploratory choices. Please sign up for Jazz auditions in May by the band room.
