Mission Statement
At Miller Middle School we provide an opportunity for every student to
achieve success with well-rounded educational experiences and to become
a responsible learner and citizen who demonstrates high personal goals.
Education Program
Miller offers a comprehensive middle-school program including
grade-level interdisciplinary teams, homeroom, block scheduling,
community-based service learning projects, computer and technology
education. Counseling and support services, student-led conferences,
and a variety of exploratory classes are provided. Class size is
approximately 25 students per teacher.
Special Services
Miller provides services to fit the needs of every student.
Special education students are given support through both
mainstreamed and pullout experiences. Specialists are brought in
as needed to fill the Individual Education Plan of each of these
students. Advanced classes and independent study programs are
available for the gifted and
talented students. There is even a math class at the high school level
for some of these students. Miller Enterprises
provides support in several ways for at-risk
students. Winning at Reading and the math specialist provide added
support for students that need an extra boost. Saturday School
has been implemented for students that are not keeping up in their
academics. The school library is now open for extended hours and
tutoring is offered through the Mentoring Program.
Miller Teachers and Staff
Miller is a very cohesive staff working to provide the best education
possible for their students. There are forty academic, elective,
and special service teachers.
Approximately fifty percent of the certified teachers have earned a
master’s degree or beyond. Teachers are grouped in teams at
each grade level. Each team works together to provide interdisciplinary
learning opportunities. The administration and support staff work
hand in hand with the teachers to insure that each student receives the
support needed for their individual learning. This support
includes a principal, vice principal, two administrative assistants, a
social worker, librarian, two counselors, eight instructional aides, one
health aide, a parent partner, six custodians, and four kitchen staff.
Together the team at Miller work hard to insure each student the
best educational opportunities.
Programs and Activities
The programs and activities of Miller are designed to encourage the
love of learning and capture the interests of as many students as
possible. There are opportunities that will expand the mind,
talent, health, and culture of each student. Miller provides
everything from sports to cartooning. Here are links to descriptions of
most of the activities.

Behavior Expectations
It is the goal of Durango School District 9-R middle schools to create
safe and positive environments that allow productive learning to occur.
The following rights are based on common sense, courtesy,
consideration of safety, and respect for the rights of others.
- The right to a positive learning environment.
- The right to be respected.
- The right to learn in a safe, positive environment.
Teachers will work with students who choose to ignore behavior
expectations and the rights of others to modify their behavior.
Contact with parents and/or meeting with parents, students, and
counselors is pursued to improve behavior. Students will be
referred to the administration for serious or repeated misbehavior.
The handbook is a great reference for behavior expectations. It
is in the front of each students planner, which makes it an easy
reference. The handbook contains information regarding the mission
of the school, policies, services provided, and the expected conduct of
the students. It is a good resource for information about Miller's
expectations of the students. You can read a copy of the handbook by
